Great bookset, the pictures don't do it justice. I was dubious when I bought it, now I'm absolutely certain it was the right choice.

I first became a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes stories when I was only about 11 or 12 years of age and that was a very long time ago indeed. Since then I have seen and heard literally hundreds of adaptations of these classic tales over the years and when it comes to audio dramatizations this set from the BBC is by far the best I've ever listened to.

This is the complete dramatization by BBC Radio Four of every single Sherlock Holmes short story and novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. I listened to it for years as the BBC began the long series in the early 1990s and since I frequently missed stories or episodes of the novels was delighted to be able to get the entire thing on CD. Clive Merrison and Michael Williams respectively play Holmes and Watson, perfectly complementary as actors and foils for each other's characters. Many writers adapted the episodes, my personal favourite was Bert Coules. Invented scenes or dramatizations of action described or mentioned in the prose but not otherwise articulated were frequently needed. All the writers, Coules particularly, always captured the dark and brooding sense of Holmes' London. The intense darkness and danger of the Victorian megalopolis is always close at hand in the series. Particularly effective is the way each episode always begins with a 'cliffhanger' scene which introduces the story right away and sets the right tone of mystery or intrigue. Although very familiar with all the stories and novels when I first began listening to the series the episodes always manage to breathe strong life into often surprisingly short tales in their original form.

I have been a Sherlock Holmes reader and listener for as long as I can remember. I have read many of Doyle's original stories (many years ago), listened to all of the available Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce audio's and seen all of their movies, alot of the Hobbs & Shelley audio versions, most of the Stanley / Shirley versions, and many of the Jeremy Brett movies. This collection by the BBC is far and away the best and most entertaining Holmes programs you will ever find, either on audio or on the screen. These two actors are the best Holmes and Watson you will ever hear or see (so far anyhow). I have a nostalgic affection for the Rathbone/Bruce programs and still listen to them when I travel, but they do not compare with these programs. In my opinion, even the excellent Jeremy Brett / Edward Hardwicke television programs don't have the edge and the flair of these BBC audio dramas.

An honest review. I would give 4 and a half if I could.

I'm going to keep this in a simple pros vs cons format, since that is what I find most helpful myself.

Stunning and superb box set. Nothing shoddy about this. Gorgeous layout, and amusing artwork. Very heavy, well constructed volumes in a Sherlock motif box with magnetic lid. Does justice to the canon. I have been collecting books for decades and know quality in books when I see it. The volumes come with a colored ribbon which matches the book cover and page edge colors. Each volume differs. Sherlock's image is a raised relief on the covers. Damn nice box set any true book lover will appreciate. Can't wait to re-read the entire Doyle collection again (and I will read these story's in style now!).The Doyle estate symbol of approval is on the box. This somehow makes it even more enjoyable. My set cost about 60 dollars from Amazon. Thomas and Mercer Press, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Even more perfect than expected

I had been waiting over a month to be able to buy this Heirloom Collection, and let me tell you it's worth every cent. The box was in fact bigger than i had expected, but i very much enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes quotes on the side. It's a tiny detail that really brings it together. The 4 Volumes are exceptional. Each Novel contains at least three illustrations and each Short Story contains one illustration. The drawings are so well drawn that they make the stories even more enjoyable than they already are! The package actually arrived in half the time promised (Expected - 6 Days, Arrived - 3 Days). There was only one problem caused by the company which made the books. His Last Bow isn't a Novel, it's a collection of Short Stories. It's written on the back of the 4th Volume as a Novel. It's only a minor detail and shouldn't take away the enjoyable quality of the Stories. Thank You very much Amazon!
