This, The Complete Sherlock Holmes: Volumes 1-4 (The Heirloom Collection), isn't the absolute best Sherlock Holmes collection, but it is extremely good. Most importantly, it does contain all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though not always in the exact same order as other editions -- making it a little confusing, when comparing different editions, to determine if all the stories are actually included (and they are). Design wise, the graphic presentation (font choices, layout, etc) of this "heirloom edition" is superb -- making it clearly better in that regard than perhaps any of the "complete" Sherlock Holmes books currently available. The color illustrations aren't bad either, but there really aren't all that many for such a large book, filled with so many classic tales.

When searching for a good copy I noticed two things from the reviews: (1) a lot of options didn't actually have the ENTIRE collection, (2) TOC and organization was poor in most options. Being the first to review this item, I'll offer my opinion. I hope this helps out anyone looking to purchase this book.

Excellent product, in all regards.

Great bookset, the pictures don't do it justice. I was dubious when I bought it, now I'm absolutely certain it was the right choice.

I first became a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes stories when I was only about 11 or 12 years of age and that was a very long time ago indeed. Since then I have seen and heard literally hundreds of adaptations of these classic tales over the years and when it comes to audio dramatizations this set from the BBC is by far the best I've ever listened to.

This is the complete dramatization by BBC Radio Four of every single Sherlock Holmes short story and novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. I listened to it for years as the BBC began the long series in the early 1990s and since I frequently missed stories or episodes of the novels was delighted to be able to get the entire thing on CD. Clive Merrison and Michael Williams respectively play Holmes and Watson, perfectly complementary as actors and foils for each other's characters. Many writers adapted the episodes, my personal favourite was Bert Coules. Invented scenes or dramatizations of action described or mentioned in the prose but not otherwise articulated were frequently needed. All the writers, Coules particularly, always captured the dark and brooding sense of Holmes' London. The intense darkness and danger of the Victorian megalopolis is always close at hand in the series. Particularly effective is the way each episode always begins with a 'cliffhanger' scene which introduces the story right away and sets the right tone of mystery or intrigue. Although very familiar with all the stories and novels when I first began listening to the series the episodes always manage to breathe strong life into often surprisingly short tales in their original form.

I have been a Sherlock Holmes reader and listener for as long as I can remember. I have read many of Doyle's original stories (many years ago), listened to all of the available Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce audio's and seen all of their movies, alot of the Hobbs & Shelley audio versions, most of the Stanley / Shirley versions, and many of the Jeremy Brett movies. This collection by the BBC is far and away the best and most entertaining Holmes programs you will ever find, either on audio or on the screen. These two actors are the best Holmes and Watson you will ever hear or see (so far anyhow). I have a nostalgic affection for the Rathbone/Bruce programs and still listen to them when I travel, but they do not compare with these programs. In my opinion, even the excellent Jeremy Brett / Edward Hardwicke television programs don't have the edge and the flair of these BBC audio dramas.

An honest review. I would give 4 and a half if I could.

I'm going to keep this in a simple pros vs cons format, since that is what I find most helpful myself.
