Death Cloud (Sherlock Holmes: the Legend Begins) By Andrew Lane Review
One of the Mysteries that the Arther Conan Doyle stories do not reveal is what kind of childhood Sherlock Holmes had. That gives writers of today a lot of room to explore. Death Cloud by Andrew Lane is on such novel that tells a story of a young Holmes at the age of 14.
It is school vacation time and Sherlock Holmes is looking forward to going home for a while, only to find that his father, a soldier, has been sent to India. He must now stay with his Uncle Sherrinford, whom he has never met.
So off he goes to Farnham, a small village, where two mysterious deaths occur and a strange cloud is seen leaving the dead bodies...
Of course, we see in the younger Holmes, as the adventure unfolds, the seeds of the Great Detective to come. These seeds are also encouraged by an American tutor hired my Mycroft Holmes. The book is filled with action, including a trip under the Thames in London.
Andrew Lane provides a different look at Sherlock Holmes, in this coming of age tale, but the young Homes we meet is well within the characteristics of the adult Holmes we know.
The writing is good, the voice is strong, the new characters are well written and interesting and the villain is special. A Sherlock Holmes pastiche worth reading...

"Not quite Holmes, but fun nonetheless."
"This is a fun, YA adventure/mystery, though the young Sherlock falls a bit short of his namesake in my estimation. Sure this is supposed to be Sherlock as a teenager before amassing the vast knowledge and the obsession Doyle's version brings to bear on... Read more

"The Game...has its opening moves."
"I very much enjoyed reading this tale of a young Holmes who, while not quite a boy genius, obviously is willing to learn and is full of potential. His relationship with his tutor, Amyus Crowe, was particularly well developed; Crowe often leads him to the... Read more

I enjoyed the plot – an appropriately elaborate mystery, complete with murder, kidnapping, London thugs, and a solution just beyond reach – and the characters, but my favorite part of this book was watching the Holmes I know blossom within this young, fresh character. Young Sherlock develops an appreciation for bee keeping, learns the basics of disguise, and gets a thrilling introduction to chemistry. Two formative characters, older brother Mycroft Holmes and tutor Amyus Crow, teach him bits of logic: collect all the details; rephrase the problem in your own words to understand it better; and, of course, “when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”
Readers of young adult mystery and adventure will enjoy this book. The Victorian era setting will also interest readers who like historical fiction. And, of course, every Holmes devotee should hurry up and enjoy this origin story.
