It should be well known to the readers of the Canon, that Sherlock Holmes found the practice of blackmail one of the most reprehensible of crimes. So it is surprising when Holmes refuses a case of couple being blackmailed...
The Story: In "The Iron Dog" Holmes and Watson receive a husband and wife to the rooms as potential clients. The husband is a major theater producer and he is being blackmailed by an ex-lover with the usual romantic tinged letters. While Dr. Watson immediately finds sympathy with the couple, he is surprised and vexed when Holmes refuses to take on the case.
Dr. Watson's vexations soon turn to shock, when Inspector Lestrade turns up to inform Holmes that the husband has been murdered and apparently by the ex-lover. Since Lestrade found out that Holmes had been consulted by the dead man only hours earlier, he suggests that the good detective check the scene of the crime. Holmes readily agrees to do so as if he had almost expected this turn of events.
During the remaining pages, Sherlock Holmes discovers the guilty party and how and why the crime was committed.
The case of "The Iron Dog" requires all of the deduction skills that Holmes can conjure as he weaves through deceit and murder. Dr. Watson is there to catalog all the action. This is a novella length story typical of the original Holmes tales.
The Writing: Steven Ehrman does a credible job in telling the story - the reader will enjoy this although it is not the best of Sherlock Holmes pastiches - the plot twists are not that deep nor are the characters fully developed. As many Sherlock Holmes pastiches tend to do, this novella relies on the reader's own long held knowledge of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and even Inspector Lestrade to fill in the character details...
Still the author provides a day of enjoyable light reading. Note this story is of novella or short novel length. I think the book would have made a better read, if it had been shortened a bit and combined with another adventure. Of course, the price of the book, no matter which format you prefer, was less than the average Sherlock Holmes offering - no doubt due to the length.
The Rating: ... This novella has a rating of 3 "Pipes." The reader will enjoy the story, but there is no new ground covered here. Yet the price is affordable and I recommend tossing it in with other Sherlock Holmes pastiches you are purchasing.
