The game is very story-driven and, yes, very visceral.

So much fun, but so many typos!

This isn't a game for everyone--it's not your typical board game at all, but that's what I love about it. This is a game that requires several hours of concentration, note taking, discussing, theorizing, and guessing. Not every gamer will have the patience for this. My husband will happily play a two hour strategy game, but this game doesn't hold his interest for long. I, on the other hand, will happily play it by myself because it reminds me of old school point and click adventure games. I've loved Sherlock Holmes and murder mysteries since I was eight, so I can't get enough of this.

A clear cut case of fun!

Perhaps I could be in no better position to have a great time playing this game since in the past few months my girlfriend and I have watched BBC's Sherlock, Elementary, and been reading Sherlock Holmes novels and stories aloud to one another. When I saw the SH:CD had been reprinted, my wallet was home with the game before I knew what happened.

Like "Murder She Wrote" and Choose Your Own Adventure Books had a Baby

It really says something about a game that it was made back in the eighties and was good enough to get remade and reprinted. Sure the mainstream games like monopoly and battleship have been around forever, but if you are a Euro gamer and know what games like Agricola and Settlers of Catan are you know those other games are not good (total crap). Sherlock however is. With a disclaimer, I know this game is going to have a love/hate relationship with most gamers. If you love playing amateur detective and LOTS of reading, if you loved the Choose Your Own Adventure Books as a kid than you will adore this games. However if walls of text and archaic English language make you want to punch baby kittens try Cosmic Encounters instead, another "good" game that has survived since the eighties. I will say also this game may make you feel stupid or angry when smarty pants Holmes tells you how he solves it in the end. Still I think it is an awesome and unique concept that will fill a special place in your collection. Other small note about this game, by its very design the replay value is finite, re-solving a mystery twice doesn't quite have the same effect. Just like rewatching the Sixth Sense doesn't make much Sense, still for 30 bucks your are guaranteed a good time for you and your friends (plays good solo and in groups) for about 10-30 hours, which is a good value in my book,

A choose-your-own-adventure for adults, set in Holmes' London. VERY FUN!

This game is a **LOT** of fun. It's unlike any game I've played before. It's Sherlock Holmes answer to a choose-your-own adventure book that you read (aloud with friends if you're not playing solo) and discuss what any/all off the details you read about might mean. It's much better than any choose your own adventure though, because it's an open world (or, and open London, anyway). And you decide when to stop investigating and bring your conclusions to Holmes. And there's a ton of depth to investigate. After reading through Holmes' solution to the first case, I said several times, "Oh yeah, I thought that was weird" when he mentioned certain details. But, there's so much to consider, it's easy to forget to figure out why that "weird" detail was important.

An immersive and problem-solving game like no other!

Ok so there are a couple of cases where we have felt a bit disappointed by the outcome (and a little cheated!) but I have to give this five stars because it really is such an ingenious game and both my husband and I are gutted that there are only ten! This makes for a lovely evening, getting comfy and sitting down with a case over tea and biscuits - as Brits living in the US we love the taste of home this provides, and the old timey feel it has to it too. It really is immersive. The materials are really beautiful, especially the newspapers and map (which is very fun to pore over). There are some typos in the case studies booklet, as this was translated from German - there is a bit of an important typo (as in, important to recognize it's a typo!) in the case which involves cracking a code, FYI... We realized it was just a mistake and so didn't get caught up in it, but after reading the forums afterwards (which is really fun to do as well - the after-analysis is just as fulfilling) we discovered that some people spent days and days trying to make sense of the mistake!

My friend and I had to put this game away because we would stay up all night playing it. It's so much fun and it really requires you to think. Some of the leaps Sherlock takes do seem to be a little far fetched, but it doesn't really bother me.

there's a pretty good chance you're a long time Holmes fan like ...

If you are buying this game, there's a pretty good chance you're a long time Holmes fan like me. I think you will enjoy it as much as I am. I'm still working my way through the cases.
