I have long been a fan of Hugh Ashton's Holmes/Watson stories although in an earlier review mentioned a down side being when you are reading his stories and realize you are just about out of pages. So when this particular collection arrived and I saw how thin it was, an understandable groan resulted. Mr Ashton has an uncanny knack of writing stories which would fit seamlessly into the original Conan Doyle accounts. He has picked up the cadences and language use which make them hard to distinguish from the originals. This outing is no different. So the reader is in for a good read although, as mentioned, far too short. Keep them coming, Hugh.

Hugh Ashton is the premiere Holmesian pastiche writer today without exception. I have read every single one of his stories and "The Hand of Glory" in this volume is one of the most perfect stories he has written. It has everything you would expect and then some. Holmes and Watson are the perfect team in this one and the ending is wrapped up neatly with Holmes anticipating the actions of his foes, employing Watson to play trump cards in one location while he closes the deal in another. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The last products of the Dispatch Box once owned by John Watson, M.D. are superbly crafted, including two stories that Dr. Watson transcribed from Holmes' notes and turned into a story of some worth. It would appear that while Sherlock Holmes was a superb consulting detective, his penmanship was terrible and his writing consisted more of notes than narratives. The good Doctor saves the day (and turns the barely readable notes by his friend Sherlock Holmes) by spinning them into readable stories.

Ashton has really nailed it here! # new stories from the tome that read just as seamlessly as if they'd come of Sir Arthur's pen. If you are a Sherlock fan , you are wanting to read these and the others from Mr. Aston who has found the voice of the old Sherlock's we loved .

Short, but Succulent

Consisting of just 3 stories, it's too short - there, having got that out of the way, let's proceed with the review:

I love traditional Sherlock pastiches. These volumes are by far the best traditional Sherlock stories not written by Sir A.C. Doyle I've ever had the pleasure to read. Buy them! You won't be disappointed!

One of the best

I have read the other books in this series and they are all worth reading, but this may be the best of the batch. There is a consistency of voice and the stories ring true to the originals. Ashton has become one of the best writers of Sherlock Holmes stories, and if you are a fan, this is a must.
