London, 1920: Boston-bred Enoch Hale, working as a reporter for the Central News Syndicate, arrives on the scene shortly after a music hall escape artist is found hanging from the ceiling in his dressing room. What at first appears to be a suicide turns out to be murder . . . the first of several using the same modus operandi. What is the connecting factor among all the victims? Or isn't there one? That's what the dogged journalist Hale aims to find out.

Covering the Hangman Murders brings him into contact with a diverse cast of witnesses and interview subjects that include Winston Churchill, William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ezra Pound. Hale, whose best friend in London is the chain-smoking poet and banker T.S. (Tom) Eliot even makes a pilgrimage to the Sussex Downs to get an opinion on the case from the great detective Sherlock Holmes. The trip is in vain, but he eventually does meet Holmes in a most surprising encounter.

Through it all there is another mystery, which perhaps goes to the mystery of the human heart. What is the lovely music hall singer Sadie Briggs concealing from Hale just her past or also her present?

A Ripping Good Tale

Amazon executives, no doubt gleefully, are aware that just about any recommendation that contains Sherlock Holmes--unless it deals with supernatural and such--will end up promptly in my chopping cart. When this book became available, although it was definitely shopping cart bound, it was viewed with muted enthusiasm. Having recently completed 'Sherlock Holmes: The War Years' by McCullen which was viewed as adequate but certainly not exceptional, There was some mental debate as to whether his latest book, this time with Dan Andriacco, was worth sending to the shopping cart.

I just finished reading Dan Andriacco and Kieran McCullen's The Amateur Executioner: Enoch Hale Meets Sherlock Holmes. It was a delightful read. The story takes place in London in the early 1920s. The authors have captured the time and setting perfectly, bringing in historic and fictional characters to tell the story. Winston Churchill is one of the suspects in the execution-style murders, Chef Inspector Henry Wiggins (remember him from Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street Irregulars?) is the Scotland detective investigating the case, and T. S. Eliot is the confidant of protagonist Enoch Hale. Oh, and Alfred Hitchcock provides a valuable clue that puts the investigators on track. I kept hoping more familiar characters would show up; I wasn't disappointed. Yeats, Shaw, Pound, appear as well as Sherlock, Mycroft and several others from the Canon. Arthur Conan Doyle, Lord Carnarvon, Sarah Bernhardt, and Houdini are mentioned. The melding of real and fictional characters worked well. I'm looking forward to the next Enoch Hale/Sherlock Holmes adventure.

The Amateur Executioner is another fine yarn by Dan Andriacco, this time with coauthor Kieren McMullen. The reader is drawn into the story by the intricate character development, especially of "Sadie," along with the fact that it is one of the few tales in which Sherlock Holmes, himself, develops into a major suspect! I have, also, not seen such clever interweaving of real historical people and fictitious characters since Nicholas Meyer's "West End Horror." Events, characters and places mentioned in The Amateur Executioner were meticulously researched. I also advise that a reader NOT overlook the section which the authors call "For the Curious" at the end of the book.

What a great read! Characters virtually come alive with to the point colorful descriptions and dialog. Since I'm a history buff and love the era in which the story takes place, I particularly liked the weaving of fictional characters and events with real historical characters and events. I look forward to the next edition(s)
