For Sale: The Sherlock Holmes Companion: An Elementary Guide by Daniel Smith

A beautiful and lavishly illustrated book on one of the greatest and most enduringly popular literary characters of all time: Sherlock Holmes.

Since it's original printing five years ago, we are re-issuing The Sherlock Holmes Companion with a full update of all the exciting detective developments from both the small and big screen as well as further details on all the major characters and locations.

Illustrated throughout with more than 150 pictures ranging from period engravings and book jackets to modern-day location shots and film stills from TV adaptations, this is a compendious guide to all the stories, their author and the enigmatic pipe-smoking creation at their heart.

Daniel Smith's witty and informed text provides plot summaries of every single Sherlock Holmes story, potted biographies of Holmes, Moriarty, Watson and of course Conan Doyle, and interviews with many original interviews with the actors who've played Holmes over the years.

This is a book aimed at both the Holmes aficionado and at the gift market - comprehensive and nostalgic while also rigorously critical and not afraid to rank the better Holmes stories against the lesser.

As a collector of all things Sherlockian, I kept putting this book off. I kept telling myself I didn't really need another Sherlock companion book, but I'm weak when it comes to this sort of thing, caved in and bought it anyway. I'm glad I did! It's one of the nicer companion books I've seen. It's laid out nicely with a brief synopsis of each story as well as a history of both fictional and non-fictional characters & actors who have portrayed Holmes and Watson. I found the timeline in the beginning very useful. The images are really nice. Some of them were new to me. Overall I've found this to be an enjoyable compilation & a worthy addition to my collection. I think this would be a great place to start for anyone new to the Canon who discovered Sherlock from the excellent BBC production of the same name and wants to check out the original.

Very good, although the story summaries are incomplete

Very good, professional presentation. My only complaint is the summaries of the stories fail to include the conclusion... as if spoilers were called for in the case of stories that are over a hundred years old! Oh well, no big deal, since you can just google each story if you don't have the time to sit and read them all, but you shouldn't have to. Anyway, very enjoyable. Definitely recommended.

This is a lovely glossy coffee-table-like book which contains synopses of all the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels (sans spoilers), but the big draw is the variety of illustrations: from the stories themselves (Sidney Paget and otherwise), covers of different Holmes editions (including an American paperback from the 1950s where the female character portrayed resembles a dance-hall girl from a saloon), playbills, movie and play posters, and more. You'll see William Gillette (who popularized Holmes' wearing of a deerstalker and smoking a calabash pipe, not Conan Doyle), Jeremy Brett, Basil Rathbone, etc. Also included are inserts by people who have had to do with Holmes, including both David Burke and Edward Hardwicke from the Brett series. Recommended for Holmes fans!

This is great beginner book. There are lots of facts and trivia which effectively make this great bedside reading. I've always enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and this is great addition to my library. For those new to Holmes, this is a great way to add something to the stories and help with understanding the world the Great Detective moved through. Two thumbs up!

A FUN AND INFORMATIVE READ.

Some books inform. Some books entertain. Some books are simply fun to read and mull over. It is nice when you come across a read that includes all three of those factors mentioned above. And so it it with this nice little book, "The Sherlock Holmes Companion," by Daniel Smith. I must tell you that I did learn a few things which is always nice and I most certainly was entertained but for me the biggest strength of this book is that it is simply a fun read.

Though I had thoughts of "Oh no, not another book on Holmes!" when I saw the adverts for Daniel Smith's book, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by THE SHERLOCK HOLMES COMPANION, AN ELEMENTARY GUIDE. Having read similar books over the years, I nevertheless found Smith's book a well-done, well-illustrated introduction to Holmes, Watson and their adventures.

The well-known saying, “Elementary, my dear Watson!” immediately springs to mind on hearing the title of Daniel Smith’s enlightening work on the great detective, The Sherlock Holmes Companion: An Elementary Guide. That the contents of this guide are anything but elementary, however, becomes clear when one sees how wide-ranging and diverse they are.

Great Gift!

Gave this to my daughter for Christmas. She watches Sherlock Holmes and Dr Who religiously on PBS. This is the perfect companion book to Sherlock Holmes.
