1913. The clouds of war are gathering. The world's great empires vie for supremacy. Europe is in turmoil, a powder keg awaiting a spark. A body is discovered on the shore below Beachy Head, just a mile from Sherlock Holmes's retirement cottage. The local police are satisfied that it's a suicide. The victim, a young man, recently suffered a disappointment in love, and Beachy Head is notorious as a place where the desperate and depressed leap to their deaths. Holmes, however, suspects murder. As he and Watson investigate, they uncover a conspiracy with shocking ramifications.

Sherlock Holmes: Gods of War by James Lovegrove

I love this author

I love this author. A great story of Holmes in the later years. The characters in it succumbed to many of the ravages of age very well. A little slower, but still on top of their game (and above many of the other, younger characters).

You could do worse.

I think that the author had a lot of fun writing this homage to the original Holmes stories. He goes out of the way to include details that clear up (or at least mention) some vague references from those stories. I enjoyed reading it.

Brilliant. Bloody brilliant.

I have read I don't know HOW many Sherlock Holmes pastiches since Nicholas Meyer's THE WEST END HORROR, all the way back in 1976. I have read the good, the bad and the indifferent. And---in all that time and for so many reasons---I can't remember any than I have loved more than SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE GODS OF WAR.

An excellent read. I am looking forward to further publications ...

As I was born and grew up in Eastbourne the book held somewhat personal interest in the reading. Well written and suspenseful. Typical of the Holmes/Watson genre. An excellent read. I am looking forward to further publications from this author. Thank you. M. K. Ray.

Good Sherlock Holmes adventure

A reasonable Sherlock style tale, Sherlock investigates a murder. As he and Dr. Watson dodge assassins, he discovers that this is not a simple murder but the first step in a plot that may lead to war. A reasonably good read for Sherlock fans.

A Singularly Masterful Pastiche

After coming to the end of this book, the only coherent thoughts I am able to string together are a slew of expletives professing how utterly amazing it was from the first to last pages, something that was truly more of an experience than your run-of-the-mill diverting, pleasant read. As such, I have been reduced to such a stupidly giddy state, not having been so thoroughly entertained by a Holmes story in so many a year, that I beg pardon in advance for any incoherencies which may occur in this review.
