This book provides readers with how to look at the literary character of Sherlock Holmes from a Christian perspective, and furthermore, using the art of deduction to find God's everlasting mercies in your life. It's a unique, one-of-a-kind book, which combines two big things in my life: a fictional detective who has stood the test of time and God, who created time itself and everything in it.

Sherlock Holmes, a beloved fictional detective who could always uncover the solution to a crime. Using practical and observational knowledge, he put the pieces together to find the answers. Could this same logic be used to study the Bible? Come along and find out!

First, a full disclosure: I know Trisha White Priebe, and I was the editor who contracted this book with her. BUT…while she was finishing the manuscript, I took a job with another publisher. When A Sherlock Holmes Devotional released, I purchased my own copy because I was eager to see how the whole thing turned out—and I was just as pleased with the book as I’d been with the original proposal. The author clearly knows both the Holmes canon and the Bible, as well as interesting historical details on Arthur Conan Doyle and the world from which he wrote. This devotional highlights characters, events, and themes from the Sherlock Holmes stories, drawing thought-provoking parallels to biblical truths…it is by turns informative, encouraging, and challenging. In the tradition of other devotionals based on “secular” topics (for example, sports, movies, or history), A Sherlock Holmes Devotional uses a beloved topic as a springboard to Christian truth. I enjoyed it tremendously and recommend it to Christian fans of the great detective.

I adore this devotional based on lessons from the works of Sherlock Holmes! Each chapter focuses on a particular quote, or a quality of Holmes and Watson, or one of their adventures, and weaves a similarity between that concept and the Christian life. Although Conan Doyle was not a notable Christian and Holmes is somewhat ambiguous about his beliefs, there are still lessons to be learned from the stories!

I am always searching for a good devotional. Not something that simply tells me what I want to hear, so I can trip along through my happy, little life, but one that teaches me, convicts me, and at least occasionally makes me smile. A Sherlock Holmes Devotional by Trisha White Priebe most definitely fits that bill.

Since 1887, when Sherlock Holmes first stalked into the public arena through the creative writing of Arthur Conan Doyle, readers have been captivated by his elevated senses and deductive reasoning.
