King’s Mary Russell mysteries “The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today.”—Lee Child “The great marvel of King’s series is that she’s managed to preserve the integrity of Holmes’s character and yet somehow conjure up a woman astute, edgy, and compelling enough to be the partner of his mind as well as his heart.”—The Washington Post Book World “A lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company.”—The New York Times “Erudite, fascinating . . . by all odds the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted.”—Houston Chronicle “An engaging romp guaranteed to please . . . perfectly written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”—USA Today, on Pirate King “Mesmerizing—another wonderful novel etched by the hand of a master storyteller. See this TITLE: Dreaming Spies: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Laurie R. King’s novels of suspense featuring Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, are critically acclaimed and beloved by readers for the author’s adept interplay of history and adventure. Now the intrepid duo is finally trying to take a little time for themselves—only to be swept up in a baffling case that will lead them from the idyllic panoramas of Japan to the depths of Oxford’s most revered institution. After a lengthy case that had the couple traipsing all over India, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are on their way to California to deal with some family business that Russell has been neglecting for far too long. Along the way, they plan to break up the long voyage with a sojourn in southern Japan. The cruising steamer Thomas Carlyle is leaving Bombay, bound for Kobe. Though they’re not the vacationing types, Russell is looking forward to a change of focus—not to mention a chance to travel to a location Holmes has not visited before.

The idea of the pair being on equal footing is enticing to a woman who often must race to catch up with her older, highly skilled husband. Aboard the ship, intrigue stirs almost immediately. Holmes recognizes the famous clubman, the Earl of Darley, whom he suspects of being an occasional blackmailer: Not an unlikely career choice for a man richer in social connections than in pounds sterling. And then there’s the lithe, surprisingly fluent young Japanese woman who befriends Russell and quotes haiku. She agrees to tutor the couple in Japanese language and customs, but Russell can’t shake the feeling that Haruki Sato is not who she claims to be.

Once in Japan, Russell’s suspicions are confirmed in a most surprising way. From the glorious city of Tokyo to the cavernous library at Oxford, Russell and Holmes race to solve a mystery involving international extortion, espionage, and the shocking secrets that, if revealed, could spark revolution—and topple an empire.

Praise for Dreaming Spies “[Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell’s] unusual partnership is, as always, a delight to observe, and [Laurie R.] King expertly combines rich historical detail, deftly drawn characters and taut suspense. For Holmes fans, mystery lovers and those interested in either Japan or Oxford, this novel is a multilayered and entirely enjoyable journey.”—Shelf Awareness “Compulsively readable . . . Through astute, precise, and elegant writing, great attention to time and place, and beautifully realized characters, King has created a mystery series that is at once intelligent, reflective, and action filled.”—Library Journal “A story that keeps the reader enthralled . . . one of the most consistently outstanding mystery series out there. Any time spent with the Russell-Holmes duo is a delight.”—Booklist “Snappy prose and a captivating plot distinguish King’s fourteenth novel featuring Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes. . . . Many will find the character deepened by his partnership with the spirited and clever Russell.”—Publishers Weekly “The author continues to offer up incredible plotlines. . . . [Holmes and Russell’s] emotional bond only adds to the magic, suspense, and beauty of the original creation. King’s imagination continues to shine!”—Suspense Magazine.

See this TITLE: The Beekeeper's Apprentice: or, On the Segregation of the Queen (A Mary Russell Mystery)

What would happen if Sherlock Holmes, a perfect man of the Victorian age--pompous, smug, and misogynistic--were to come face to face with a twentieth-century female? If she grew to be a partner worthy of his great talents? Laurie R. King, whose very different first novel, A Grave Talent (SMP, 1993), drew rave reviews, read the Conan Doyle stories and wondered about such an imaginary encounter. And following through, she has written The Beekeeper's Apprentice. 1914, a young woman named Mary Russell meets a retired beekeeper on the Sussex Downs. His name is Sherlock Holmes. And although he may have all the Victorian "flaws" listed above, the Great Detective is no fool, and can spot a fellow intellect even in a fifteen-year-old woman. So, at first informally, then consciously, he takes Mary Russell as his apprentice. They work on a few small local cases, then on a larger and more urgent investigation, which ends successfully.

All the time, Mary is developing as a detective in her own right, with the benefit of the knowledge and experience of her mentor and, increasingly, friend. And then the sky opens on them, and they find themselves the targets of a slippery, murderous, and apparently all-knowing adversary. Together they devise a plan to trap their enemy--a plan that may save their lives but may also kill off their relationship. This is not a "Sherlock Holmes" story. It is the story of a modern young woman who comes to know and work with Holmes, the story of young woman coming to terms with herself and with this older man who embodies the age that is past.

Russell's attentions turn to the New Temple of God and its leader, Margery Childe, a charismatic suffragette and a mystic, whose draw on the young theology scholar is irresistible. But when four bluestockings from the Temple turn up dead shortly after changing their wills, could sins of a capital nature be afoot? Holmes and Russell investigate, as their partnership takes a surprising turn.

Through the mists of the moor there have been sightings of a spectral coach made of bones carrying a woman long-ago accused of murdering her husband--and of a hound with a single glowing eye.

Returning to the scene of one of his most celebrated cases, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes and Russell investigate a mystery darker and more unforgiving than the moors themselves.

Only hours after Holmes and Russell return from solving one murky riddle on the moor, another knocks on their front door...literally. It’s a mystery that begins during the Great War, when Gabriel Hughenfort died amidst scandalous rumors that have haunted the family ever since. A trail of ominous clues comprise a mystery that leads from an English hamlet to the city of Paris to the wild prairie of the New World. The trap is set, the game is afoot; but can Holmes and Russell catch an elusive killer--or has the murderer caught them?

See this TITLE: Pirate King (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes)

The latest adventure for the intrepid Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes takes readers into the frenetic world of silent films, where the pirates are real and the shooting isn’t all done with cameras. In England’s young silent-film industry, the megalomaniacal Randolph Fflytte is king. Nevertheless, Mary Russell is dispatched to investigate the criminal activities that surround Fflytte’s popular movie studio. So Russell is traveling undercover to Portugal, along with the film crew that is gearing up to shoot a cinematic extravaganza, Pirate King.

Based on Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, the project will either set the standard for movie-making for a generation or sink a boatload of careers. Nothing seems amiss until the enormous company starts rehearsals in Lisbon, where the thirteen blonde-haired, blue-eyed actresses Mary is bemusedly chaperoning meet the swarm of real buccaneers, Fflytte has recruited to provide authenticity. But when the crew embarks for Morocco and the actual filming, Russell feels a building storm of trouble: a derelict boat, a film crew with secrets, ominous currents between the pirates, decks awash with budding romance – and now the pirates are ignoring Fflytte and answering only to their dangerous outlaw leader, La Rocha. Plus, there’s a spy on board.

Where can Sherlock Holmes be? As movie make-believe becomes true terror, Russell and Holmes themselves may experience a final fadeout.

It’s only the second day of 1924, but Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, find themselves embroiled in intrigue. It starts with a New Year’s visit from Holmes’s brother Mycroft, who comes bearing a strange package containing the papers of an English spy named Kimball O’Hara—the same Kimball known to the world through Kipling’s famed Kim. Inexplicably, O’Hara withdrew from the “Great Game” of espionage and now he has just as inexplicably disappeared.

When Russell discovers Holmes’s own secret friendship with the spy, she knows the die is cast: she will accompany her husband to India to search for the missing operative. But Russell soon learns that in this faraway and exotic land, it’s often impossible to tell friend from foe—and that some games aren’t played for fun but for the highest stakes of all…life and death.

See this TITLE: The Murder of Mary Russell: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes

Laurie R. King's bestselling Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series weaves rich historical detail and provocative themes with intriguing characters and enthralling suspense. Russell and Holmes have become one of modern literature's most beloved teams. But does this adventure end it all? Mary Russell is used to dark secrets--her own, and those of her famous partner and husband, Sherlock Holmes. Trust is a thing slowly given, but over the course of a decade together, the two have forged an indissoluble bond. And what of the other person to whom Mary Russell has opened her heart: the couple's longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson? Russell's faith and affection are suddenly shattered when a man arrives on the doorstep claiming to be Mrs. Hudson's son.

What Samuel Hudson tells Russell cannot possibly be true, yet she believes him--as surely as she believes the threat of the gun in his hand. In a devastating instant, everything changes. And when the scene is discovered--a pool of blood on the floor, the smell of gunpowder in the air--the most shocking revelation of all is that the grim clues point directly to Clara Hudson. Or rather to Clarissa, the woman she was before Baker Street. The key to Russell's sacrifice lies in Mrs. Hudson's past.

To uncover the truth, a frantic Sherlock Holmes must put aside his anguish and push deep into his housekeeper's secrets--to a time before her disguise was assumed, before her crimes were buried away. There is death here, and murder, and trust betrayed. And nothing will ever be the same.

Praise for the award-winning novels of Laurie R. King "The great marvel of King's series is that she's managed to preserve the integrity of Holmes's character and yet somehow conjure up a woman astute, edgy, and compelling enough to be the partner of his mind as well as his heart."--The Washington Post Book World "The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today."--Lee Child "A lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company."--The New York Times "Erudite, fascinating . . . by all odds the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted."--Houston Chronicle "Intricate clockworks, wheels within wheels."--Booklist "Imaginative and subtle."--The Seattle Times "Impossible to put down."--Romantic Times "Remarkably beguiling."--The Boston Globe

The Iron Dog by Steven Ehrman – Sherlock Holmes Novella

Sherlock Holmes Pastiches and Reviews:

"The Iron Dog" by Steven Ehrman.

Reviewed By Scott Harker

Publisher: Self-published, Copyright 2013, First (not indicated) Edition - Trade Paperback.

It should be well known to the readers of the Canon, that Sherlock Holmes found the practice of blackmail one of the most reprehensible of crimes. So it is surprising when Holmes refuses a case of couple being blackmailed...

The Story: In "The Iron Dog" Holmes and Watson receive a husband and wife to the rooms as potential clients. The husband is a major theater producer and he is being blackmailed by an ex-lover with the usual romantic tinged letters. While Dr. Watson immediately finds sympathy with the couple, he is surprised and vexed when Holmes refuses to take on the case.

Dr. Watson's vexations soon turn to shock, when Inspector Lestrade turns up to inform Holmes that the husband has been murdered and apparently by the ex-lover. Since Lestrade found out that Holmes had been consulted by the dead man only hours earlier, he suggests that the good detective check the scene of the crime. Holmes readily agrees to do so as if he had almost expected this turn of events.

During the remaining pages, Sherlock Holmes discovers the guilty party and how and why the crime was committed.

The case of "The Iron Dog" requires all of the deduction skills that Holmes can conjure as he weaves through deceit and murder. Dr. Watson is there to catalog all the action. This is a novella length story typical of the original Holmes tales.

The Writing: Steven Ehrman does a credible job in telling the story - the reader will enjoy this although it is not the best of Sherlock Holmes pastiches - the plot twists are not that deep nor are the characters fully developed. As many Sherlock Holmes pastiches tend to do, this novella relies on the reader's own long held knowledge of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and even Inspector Lestrade to fill in the character details...

Still the author provides a day of enjoyable light reading. Note this story is of novella or short novel length. I think the book would have made a better read, if it had been shortened a bit and combined with another adventure. Of course, the price of the book, no matter which format you prefer, was less than the average Sherlock Holmes offering - no doubt due to the length.

The Rating: ... This novella has a rating of 3 "Pipes." The reader will enjoy the story, but there is no new ground covered here. Yet the price is affordable and I recommend tossing it in with other Sherlock Holmes pastiches you are purchasing.

“Murder in the Vatican – The Church Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes” by Ann Margaret Lewis Review
May 30th, 2014 by Aldouspi

Murder at Vatican

Sherlock Holmes Pastiches and Reviews:

"Murder in the Vatican - The Church Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes" by Ann Margaret Lewis.

Reviewed By Scott Harker

Publisher: Gasogen Books, Copyright 2010, First Edition - Trade Paperback.

In several of the Canon stories, there are references to unpublished cases such as the death of Cardinal Tosca. This book reveals the actual stories behind three such references.

The Stories: In "The Death of Cardinal Tosca" Holmes and Watson have traveled to Rome for a brief vacation. But upon their arrival, the detective and his biographer are summoned by Pope Leo XIII to investigate the murder of Cardinal Tosca.

While Holmes investigates, Pope Leo XIII both observes and participates in the events that take place, including going incognito to rescue a woman in danger.

In the story entitled "The Vatican Cameos," Pope Leo XIII tell of his first meeting with Sherlock Holmes, when Holmes is asked to investigate the disappearance of a gift from the Pope to Queen Victoria.

In the finale tale, "The Second Coptic Patriarch," Holmes and Watson are called upon to help the Catholic priest and detective in his own right, Father Brown, who finds himself in jail.

The Writing: Ann Margaret Lewis does a more than adequate job of telling a story - the reader will enjoy these. Note that there is not a lot of action in these stories although the mysteries and the solutions worked out by Holmes are worthy of the detective.

What is most fascinating and makes this an interesting Sherlock Holmes pastiche is the interactions between Sherlock Holmes and Pope Leo XIII. Holmes and Watson get a look into the Catholic Church in a very personal way via the Pope. And the results or insights... I will leave you to discover.

The Rating: ... This collection of three stories has a rating of 4 "Pipes." The reader will enjoy the story as well as the interactions of the characters both fictional and those based on real people.

A Study in Lavender: Queering Sherlock Holmes by Joseph R. G. DeMarco Review

A Study in Lavender: Queering Sherlock Holmes by Joseph R. G. DeMarco Review

product image

Whenever I read a new collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, there are two aspects I hope to find. First that all the stories are well written and enjoyable. And that the stories provide new insights into Holmes and Watson or that a new twist will be provided ino their adventures.

In both categories, "A Study in Lavender" succeeds. Too often an editor places the best story at the beginning of a collection and the rest are go downhill from there. With this collection, all the stories provide a good read. As as for a twist, exploring the Victorian world of Sherlock Holmes where characters are homosexual - gay or lesbian, certainly provides new ways to understand Holmes and Watson as they either see these qualities within themselves are within their clients.

There is no overt sexual scenes in this anthology, instead the characters "gayness" provide new problems and crimes that must be dealt with. In some stories, it is Holmes or Watson or both that must deal with their hidden homosexuality.

For example, in "The Adventure of the Poesy Ring" by Elka Cloke, two men, two lovers, shared twin rings and now one is dead and his ring has vanished. While Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate the disappearance of the lover's ring, Watson recognizes his own inner love For Holmes and wonders if Holmes shares those feelings. As if doing a scientific experiment, Watson kisses Holmes and then must face the possibility that their friendship is over...

In "The Case of the Wounded Heart" by Rajan Khanna, Inspector Lestrade's police career is threatened as he investigates a murder that seems to involve another policeman - his lover.

And sometimes it is the villain who must come to terms, or not, of his homosexuality. In the story, "Whom God Destroys" by Ruth Sims, Sir Author Conan Doyle, unwittingly harbors a serial killer...

Each story in this collection works at the level of mystery and in revealing the difficulties of being "gay" in a Victorian Society...
