"A Study In Sherlock" Edited by Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger is a collection of 16 stories where the stories are justified as being Sherlock Holmes pastiches be dint of the authors being somehow inspired by the Sherlock Holmes canon by Sir Author Conan Doyle. In this collection of short tales, Sherlock Holmes may or may not appear, but there is some type of reference or association to the consulting detective. Authors include Alan Bradley, Laura Lippman, Charles Todd and Neil Gaiman amongst others.

The publisher of this book has done a good job of marketing the volume. There have been many reviews and I even heard an interview with Laurie King on PBS which mentioned the book in passing. Despite the touting of praise this advertising campaign generated, I found the anthology to be disappointing. Please understand me that the stories here are well written and interesting by themselves. But as a collection of Sherlock Holmes related stories, the question arises where is Holmes in these stories?

The theme uniting this anthology is that the authors were inspired by Holmes at some point in their lives - perhaps they read the original stories when they were 13 or in college and remember the experience fondly. And thus they were invited to submit stories to the editors. But being inspired didn't mean they all actually wrote stories where Holmes or Watson or associated characters actually appear... With a few exceptions, Holmes and Watson are absent from the stories. And that is what I found disappointing.

When I buy a collection about Sherlock Holmes, I expect to find the detective placed in new situations where his talents and personality will be challenged and new insights (and thrills) will be given to the reader. Oh well...

The Stories:  The first story in the collection is "You'd Better Go In Disguise" by Alan Bradley. The protagonist is visiting a park. As he tells of what he sees and his reasons for being in the park, we realize that we are looking at the last few events before he is captured by Holmes and Watson.

"The Entwined" by J. R. Campbell finds Sherlock Holmes visiting a woman in a madhouse. She confesses to murders that she could not do and as Holmes interrogates her - he glimpses another reality beyond our own.

Another well written story that I liked was "The Adventure of the Purlioned Paget" by Phillip Margolin and Jerry Margolin. It is a modern period story where a gathering of Sherlock Holmes collectors is marred when an original illustration by Sidney Paget goes missing. No Holmes or Watson here, but the mystery and writing make for a pleasant read.

A story that was a real stretch for inclusion here was "The Last of Sheila Locke-Holmes" by Laura Lippman. A young girl decides to be a detective and uses the pseudonym of Locke-Holmes. She investigates her parents and find some flaws. This is a coming of age story that has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes.

And finally, here is another story that illustrates my disappointment: "The Eyak Interpreter" by Dana Stabenow. Here the author uses one of her own established characters, Kate Shugak. Set in Alaska, Kate investigates the unusual kidnapping and then return of a young native Alaskan. The setting and the style of the story is fine and I had never heard of the Kate Shugak, but would found myself wanting to read other stories about her. Still no Holmes here. It was only upon reading the afterword that I was informed that this story was some how associated with the original canon: The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter." I missed the connection completely. My bad or the editors' bad?

In conclusion: There are some good Holmes stories here. In fact, Neil Gaiman's "The Case of Death and Honey" make picking up the book worthwhile on its own merit, but it should have been printed in a real Sherlock Holmes anthology. Unfortunately, for me, there are too many non-Holmes stories printed in the volume to make for a satisfactory reading.

The Rating: ... I give this book 2 "Pipes." It is not that there aren't a lot of good stories here, but I found too many that I would not call an actual Sherlock Holmes pastiche. Your definition of a Sherlock Holmes pastiche may be different...

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows

It's not often that I force myself to go to a midnight showing of a film - so when/ I do, it had better be worth it... Rest assured Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows managed to out exceed every one of my expectations. This movie is as good, if not BETTER, than the original!

This is a story about cunning, mental agility, and intellectual prowess. We all know of the struggle between good and evil, light verse dark, and we had heard of Holmes verse Moriarty, Guy Ritchie ensures we will never forget the latter. The latest installment of this epic franchise will have you riveted to your seat and leave you wanting more.

As Moriarty's lust for power, control, and money in 1891 continues to escalate Sherlock Holmes is increasingly becoming a nuisance that Moriarty is determined to eradicate. We find that Sherlock has been watching very closely the news reports of the day and has found that they all lead to Moriarty. Sherlock is determined to bring down Moriarty's empire, and Moriarty is determined to kill Holmes. With the two powerhouses on a collision course their can't help but to be collateral damage. You will be kept guessing till the very end and then you will want to watch the film again.

Mr. Downey and Mr. Law - continue their amazing onscreen chemistry of the bickering best friends Holmes and Watson. Across the board the acting was FANTASTIC - what a cast and obviously a great director. Jared Harris deserves special commendation - his portrayal of the far too intelligent and over confident Moriarty with a dash of remorseless insanity was mind blowing. He was able to humanize the character one moment, but then repulse you in the very next scene - wow! Since we are on the topic of great performances, Robert Downey truly has a way to convey a world of emotions without a word. The scene on the boat for instance; he was able to display a true feeling of vulnerability tempered with a steeled resolve to overcome, sir you are AMAZING!

Do not walk - RUN to see this in theaters. The big screen plays a very significant role in this film. Whether is the massive explosions or the slow-motion scenes - you are hereby commanded to see this film multiple times in theater, then also purchase it on Blu-Ray when it comes out!

"Gaslight Grimoire, Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes" Edited by J. R. Campbell and Charles Prepolec is a collection of 11 stories where supernatural and fantastical events are allowed to take. In this collection of pastiches, Ghosts and other weird things can apply... Authors include Barbara Hambly, Martin Powell, J. R. Campbell and Bob Madison amongst others.

The Story:  The first story in the book, "The Lost Boy" by Barbara Hambly. Sherlock Holmes visits Neverland and with the aid of Peter Pan defeats a nightmare and saves some children. What makes this whimsical story so interesting is the effect that Neverland has on Holmes and the fact that he meets Mrs. Watson wandering there as well...

"The Entwined" by J. R. Campbell finds Sherlock Holmes visiting a woman in a madhouse. She confesses to murders that she could not do and as Holmes interrogates her - he glimpses another reality beyond our own.

Another interesting story was "The Grantchester Grimoire" by Chico Kidd and Rick Kennett. This pastiche features another literary detective, Carnacki the Ghost Finder otherwise known as the Occult Detective. Sherlock Holmes is invited to investigate a mystery that has also attracted the attention of a young Carnacki. With evil books and ghosts and some decent deductive reasoning by Holmes, even if you do not know who Carnacki is, you can still enjoy the story.

The Writing:  The editors, Campbell and Prepolec have the right idea of exploring otherly world adventures, but do not provide us with the best executed stories. The Hambly story, which is the first story presented, was the strongest of the lot, for me. Of course, your taste may vary and you will find some of the other stories better... Unfortunately, you will find some of the stories much worst.

Don't get me wrong, it is always fun when the supernatural and the world of Sherlock Holmes intertwine. It gives one a chance to see Holmes and Watson in a different light. And almost all the stories, here, have their "points of interest." I must admit though, I did not bother to read completely the last story in collection: "The Red Planet League" by Kim Newman. Actually the author's writing was fine, but the story only featured Professor Moriarty - Holmes was not in it at all. I am sure the intent of the story was supposed to be one of comical revenge using the H.G. Wells' War of the World framework, but I found it to mean spirited to enjoy and skpped to the ending...

The Rating: ... I give this book 3 "Pipes." This is not the best anthology of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, but the majority of the stories are worth reading...

The Case of the Left-Handed Lady by Nancy Springer is the second novel in a series of Sherlock Holmes Pastiches revolving around the sister of Sherlock Holmes. Enola Holmes is several years younger than her brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. In fact, she is not yet of legal age to be on her own. But when her mother left to pursue her own adventures, Enola has had to take care of herself (this all occurred in the first novel of this series.) Currently she resides in London and works as a finder of lost things under an alias. Enola's brothers have threatened to place her in a boarding school for Proper Young Ladies, so she is in hiding from both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.

The Story:  Sir Eustace Austair's teenage daughter, Lady Cecily, has disappeared from her room without a trace. Enola is determined to find her. To do so she must roam the dark, midnight streets of London where murderers roam. Disguised as a silent nun, Enola follows clues while avoiding being discovered by her brother Sherlock. Well, she almost avoids being discovered...

The question arises, is it possible that Lady Cecily is a runaway, who does not want to be found? Or is she being held captive through the use of hypnosis and manipulation?

It is certainly enjoyable, joining Enola as she walks and runs through the cobblestoned streets of Victorian London figuring where Cecily is and how to rescue her. She makes deductions as well as her older brothers do...

The Writing:  Nancy Springer is the writer of many works geared to teenage audiences (young adults). But Holmes fans of any age will enjoy her Sherlock Holmes pastiches. The writing is clear and detailed. The plots are intriging and the characterizations are finely drawn.

Many readers will be delighted with Springer's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, as seen through the eyes of his younger sister. Although I do not believe that Mycroft would be as short sighted, socially, as Springer sees him, but unusual interpretations are part of the fun of writing and reading a pastiche...

The Rating: ... I give this book 4 "Pipes." This is a well-written Sherlock Holmes pastiche, that the reader will be hard pressed to put down, once started. In fact, you should pick up all of the Enola Holmes novels...

Here is a series of related stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in India. There have been many pastiches written about Sherlock Holmes in India and Tibet - almost all of them occurring during the Great Hiatus when the world thought Holmes was dead. It is rare indeed when both Holmes and Watson are in India at the same time...

The Story:  The first story in this collection starts out with Holmes and Watson being asked, by an emissary of the Ranne of Kanchee to investigate the case of the Shankaracharya, a holy, religious figure who appears to have been framed for murder. And thus the two become involved in the Great Game of politics and intrigue going on the subcontinent of India.

The case is resolved, but before Holmes and Watson can return to England, Dr. Watson is asked to treat a young boy who has contracted malaria. While doing so, Dr. Watson begins to research the possible connection of a particular breed of mosquito with the spread of the disease. Meanwhile another mystery occupies Holmes's time.

Other stories in this book involve important Indian and British historical figures of the late 1880's from Lord Ripon and Madame Blavatsky to Vivekananda, Aurobindo, and Tagore. These figures provide glimpses into the historical context and perhaps the mindset of India under British rule. Other stories involve Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli (the Jungle Book) and Kim.

All and all, Holmes and Watson romp over much of India showing us another part of the Victorian Age...

The Writing:  Vithal Rajan is has lead an active life promoting peace through the world. He served as a "mediator" in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was a founding faculty member of the School of Peace Studies, Bradford University, U.K. He eventually returned to India where he is now the volunteer chair of the Confederation of Voluntary Associations, which works for communal harmony between poor Hindu and Muslim communities...

While not a professional writer, Rajan is a man of letters and the writing in this book is well done. There are some odd sentence structures and word choices which I attribute more to the English of India flavoring the literature. I should note that the activities of Dr. Watson are the main focal points through out most of the stories, while Holmes makes his appearances to make sure the mysteries are solved... The characterizations of Holmes and Watson are within the parameters of most viewpoint of these characters, yet there is a uniqueness, that I found fascinating. So also was I intrigued the recreation of 1880's India and its political and social culture.

This hardback version of this book is limited to 500 copies and was handmade by the publisher in India. You will find that the book has a variety of different colored covers which maybe different than the one shown here. A paperback edition from Random house is now available.

The Rating: ... I give this book 3 "Pipes." This is not your typical collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures and mysteries. While I found it enjoyable, it may not be your cup of tea...

There are many types of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. Some tell stories of the Great Detective, some deal with stories about Arthur Conan Doyle and so on. The mystery novel,"The Adventure of the Missing Brother" by Eugene Edmund Snyder falls into the pastiche category that uses Sherlock Holmes Fan Clubs as the tie-in to Sherlock Holmes.

The Story:  The 221 Club is a typical Sherlock Holmes society or fan club with monthly meetings where lectures and stories are told related to the Sherlock Holmes canon as written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Most of the members of the club are associated with the local University, being professors and the like.

After one such meeting, club members are asked to look into the apparent disappearance of the brother of a guest. Professor Lockley Soames (who takes on the Holmes mantle) and others rise to the challenge...

Has the brother been murdered? Is his disappearance related to the sudden marketing of gold coins in the area? And what of the death of the brother's dentist? All these questions and more must be answered by the 221 Club members...


The Writing:  Eugene Snyder has written several histories centered around Portland, Oregon. The Adventure of the Missing Brother appears to be his first fiction novel. The writing is competent and kept my interest to the end of the book. I did figure out the puzzle slightly ahead of the characters in the book and most readers will be able to solve things at the same pace. But this did not distract from the enjoyment of the novel.

While neither Holmes or Watson are in this book, anyone who is a member of a Sherlock Holmes club or a general fan of the Great Detective will find the ongoing Holmsian references found in the story of interest and/or amusing.

The Rating: ... I give this book 3 "Pipes." While this is not a book that you won't be able to put down once you start, it certainly is worth adding to your Sherlock Holmes collection. Pick it up the next time you are on Amazon or see it on eBay.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Hentzau Affair" is also a pastiche of "The Prisoner of Zenda" by Anthony Hope.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" tells the story of an Englishman, Rudolf Rassendyll who must sacrifice his own happiness and save a kingdom. A drugged and kidnapped monarch-to-be must be impersonated by look-alike (Rudolf Rassendyll) at the coronation, lest his kingdom fall into ruin at the hands of an evil half-brother.

The current story takes place a few years after the King of Ruritania has been crowned...

The Story:  Colonel Sapt of the Ruritanian Court has come to England to enlist once again the aid of Rudolf Rassendyll. He hopes that Rudolf will reenact his impersonation of the King, giving the monarch a chance to recover from a serious illness.

Unfortunately, Rassendyll cannot be found and Sapt goes to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to help find him. In the interveiw with Colonel Sapt, Holmes quickly realizes that serious and evil events have already taken place - a kidnapping has occurred which first must be resolved before Holmes can tackle the missing Rudolf.

Events take their course and soon Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes are on their way to Ruritania where they believe Rassendyll is being held captive in the castle of Zenda or nearby. While seeking clues to the missing man's whereabouts, Holmes and Watson are attacked by agents of the King's evil brother, Rupert of Hentzau, who still wants the crown for himself.

Holmes and Watson face mystery, treachery and physical danger as they seek to save Ryssendyll, Queen Flavia of Ruritania and the kingdom itself...

The Writing:  It is always nice when you open a book and by the end of the first page you are already carried away into the world of Sherlock Holmes and are eagerly waiting to see what happens.

David Stuart Davies writes well. His Holmes and Watson are excellent creations that match up nicely with how the characters are portrayed by Doyle. Holmes is insightful, inventive and adventurous in just the right combination.

David Stuart Davies works hard to stay within the world and parameters that Conan Doyle's novels and stories created. He has written other Sherlock Holmes pastiches as well a biography of Jeremy Brett. His knowledge and his feel for the world of Sherlock Holmes is well represented here.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Lyme Regis Horror" contains the title novel as well a a few small vignettes.

The author David Ruffle is a resident of Lyme Regis, England and that I suspect is one of the reasons why the story takes place in the city.

The Story:  If you have read Bram Stoker's Dracula or seen one of the numerous plays and/or movies based on the Stoker's novel, you will be able to quickly identify the main plot of the novel.

The novel starts off the a letter inviting Watson to visit an old physician friend in Lyme Regis. And since Holmes does not have a current case, Watson badgers Holmes to take a brief holiday with him and they are soon in Lyme Regis.

And while the first part of the novel is often devoted to Holmes and Watson telling each other how valuable they are in each other's life, a mystery is soon presented to them.

A ship comes to shore without a crew. A woman who has recently died of blood loss has been seen, at night, despite being buried. A ghost dog has been sighted... The well-read reader will instantly know that a vampire is in town.

Holmes, too, quickly recognizes the danger and the novel then continues with a confrontation with the vampire and his eventual destruction.

A more interesting subplot is that of the Widower Watson, whose first wife has been gone for a few years.

The Inn that Watson and Holmes stay at in Lyme Regis is run by a widow and her teenage son. The widow, Lydia Heidler, bears a striking resemblance to the first Mrs. Watson. And soon sparks are flying between the two people. Watson even goes dancing with Lydia...

The Writing:  The writing is good enough to keep us reading the book despite the obvious plot and motivations of the characters.

It is in the details that Ruffle's has yet to master as a writer. There are descriptions, of course, but they provide mere outlines of events and not the reality.

For example, the author has Holmes and Watson sit down and consume innumerable meals in this novel, but does not bother to describe anything they eat. I kept wondering if Lyme Regis had any local soup or sandwich that the residents boasted of...

I also was confused over some of the time references of the characters' past, in particular, regarding the time lime of Mrs. Heidler.

The Rating:  ... This novel has a rating of 2 "Pipes." If you were planning to buy several Sherlock Holmes pastiches at one time, I would place this book at number three or four on my list...

"The Boy Sherlock Holmes | His 1st Case: Eye of the Crow" is the story of a young Sherlock Holmes, aged 13.

There have been other Sherlock Holmes pastiches that have dealt with the development of Sherlock Holmes in his childhood and those that look at his family. Each seems to want to explain why Sherlock became the man that Conan Doyle wrote about. This novel is no exception.

If you have ever pondered on why Holmes is emotionally detached - this story provides an answer. It also explains why he is so logical, which is due to his father's teachings...

Of course, you may disagree with Shane Peacock's explanations, but that is why the world of Sherlock Holmes is so fascinating - there are so many ways to interpret the character.

The Story:  Sherlock Holmes is a 13-year-old, living in a poorer section of London with his ex-professor father and his disinherited mother. As he has been doing lately, Sherlock is playing hooky from school, preferring to wander the streets of London instead.

After reading about a murder of woman, the boy Holmes manages to be present when the accused murderer is being brought to gaol. In an unexpected encounter, the prisoner has a brief conversation with Holmes in which he declares his innocence. And thus Sherlock Holmes is drawn into his first case.

Holmes goes to the murder site, an alley in Whitechapel. Observing the behavior of nearby crows, he discovers a clue to the real murderer overlooked by the police - a glass eye.

As the young Holmes pursues the case - he is assisted reluctantly by a local gang leader of boys or Irregulars by the name of "Malefactor." Another unexpected aid to this cause is the young daughter of a "do-gooder" by the name of Irene Doyle. And eventually Holmes's mother, who teaches music lessons, is also enlisted to solve the case.

Holmes, himself, is arrested as a potential accessory to the crime by a Scotland Yard Detective named Lestrade. But Holmes manages to escape his prison cell and continue with the case.

Unfortunately, for Holmes and those around him, the murderer realizes that he is being pursued and strikes back...

The Writing:  I must admit of a little reluctance to taking up this book, although I have had a copy for some time. Despite my hesitation, I found the writing by Shane Peacock to be quite good. Expecting a work for a more juvenile audience, this may actually be geared towards the adult reader.

Shane Peacock's version of Sherlock Holmes's youth is different than the one that I imagined, but he treats the subject fairly and the characters are well drawn. There are some plot devices that are obvious and I do which the path of the plot had gone differently, but that is due to my own inner vision of Holmes and not the fault of the author.

The Rating:  ... This novel has a rating of 3 "Pipes." This is a book to add to your collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. It provides a different look at Sherlock Holmes than most pastiches.
