matt-scudder-lawrence-blockWhich is your favorite Lawrence Block character?

Is it Mathew Scudder, ex-cop, reformed alcoholic and unofficial private investigator? Or perhaps you prefer John Keller, the hit man for random hire. While a bit of a loner, Keller is a nice, easy-going kind of guy, whose steady hands, cool nerves and perfectly honed professional skills, match his hobby and passion of stamp collecting. Such skills also come in handy when he is killing people.

Or you may favor gentleman thief and bookstore owner Bernie Rhodenbarr. No matter who your favorite is, since Lawrence Block is the grand master of crime, mystery and suspense novels, you have a lot to love.

By the way, you may know this author as Ben Christopher, Anne Campbell Clark, Liz Crowley, Jill Emerson, Lesley Evans, Chip Harrison, Don Holliday, Paul Kavanagh, Sheldon Lord, Andrew Shaw or John Warren Wells, too. Block is a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, and he has won the Edgar Allan Poe (4 times) and Shamus Awards, as well as other honors in France, Germany, and Japan.

No doubt Lawrence Block is a hard working pulp crime novelist, and thankfully a very prolific writer. And here is some good news for mystery and suspense fans, Lawrence Block is resurrecting many of his early books, some written pseudonymously and now being released under his true name.

Sherlock Holmes and the Menacing Metropolis by Allan Mitchell Review
Jun 7th, 2016 by Aldouspi

Here is a recent Sherlock Holmes pastiche written in poetic stanzas that has come to my attention...

Sherlock Holmes and the Menacing Metropolis

After Holmes has rid the moors of the huge grizzly bear that was wantonly killing livestock, Holmes returned to London, only to discover that his reputation had been shredded no less than the sheep on the moors. He concludes that the diabolical mind behind the menace is still very much in evidence. Could Moriarty have survived the fall? Was he back and seeking revenge? Holmes' plan for his retirement was complete, but once his mind had been restored, he realized that he had to finish his work, once and for all.

We discover that the Great Metropolis harbors evil and deviltry far more sinister than Dartmoor's menacing moors could offer - it is not for nothing that Watson describes London as the great cesspool draining the Empire of its dregs. Its evil stems from the hearts of the most heartless of men, evil against which a group of stalwart Londoners is determined to act. Knowledge is power and forewarned is forearmed, it is said, but fore-knowledge is fragile and Sherlock must balance probability with instinct, caution with decisiveness, when warned of impending disaster for both City and Realm.

Allan Mitchell's stirring stanzas of reeling rhyme once again stretch back to an earlier era to witness the never-ending battle between Sherlock Holmes and the Menacing Metropolis.

Actual Customer Comment: Alan Mitchell first brought us the epic Sherlock Holmes poem in the form of “The Menacing Moors.” Now the author/poet returns to that format in the sequel, “The Menacing Metropolis”.

With events that begin immediately following the previous book, Holmes and Watson are back in London after Holmes’s recent sojourn to Sussex. They have learned that Professor Moriarty, believed to be dead, may be alive. Whoever has left a taunting note on the door of 221 Baker Street certainly wants them to think so.

With Watson’s invitation into a secret crime-fighting society, the investigation begins in earnest.

Actual Customer Comment: I enjoyed the book, but I have said before and I say again, poetry is made to be read aloud. I read the entire 170 pages aloud over two days. The cadence at times reminded me of The Night before Christmas, and sometimes of Dr. Seuss, but the story is definitely there!

Holmes detects the presence of a devious mind behind the events of The Menacing Moors. He wonders whether or not Moriarty could possibly be alive. Watson reminds Holmes that Moriarty had a brother, Colonel James Moriarty who had defamed Holmes in the newspapers following Professor Moriarty died at Reichenbach Falls. Then there is Colonel Moran. He is supposed to be in prison, but is discovered to have escaped. Nothing really is a deciding factor in determining who the mastermind really is, but Holmes and a group called The Tower are determined to find out!

Mary Russell, Sherlock Holmes and Laurie R. King

Books About Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes by Laurie R. King

In the world of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, the series of novels featuring a renewed Sherlock Holmes and his wife Mary Russell by author Laurie R. King are amongst the best written. Below is a look at several of the novels (not all), listed in a non-logical order ....

See this TITLE: The Mary Russell Series 9-Book Bundle: O Jerusalem, Justice Hall, The Game, Locked Rooms, The Language of Bees, The God of the Hive, Pirate King, Garment ... Spies (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes)

In daring to re-imagine the life of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic Sherlock Holmes, Laurie R. King’s New York Times bestselling mystery series succeeds on the strength of its own now-beloved protagonist: Mary Russell, the young American who literally stumbles upon the great retired detective-turned-beekeeper. With the dazzling mix of suspense, period detail, and enthralling pace that is King’s hallmark, these acclaimed novels follow Russell as she rises out of her mentor’s shadow to form a long-running partnership with the always inscrutable and charismatic Holmes. Traversing such exotic locales as British-occupied Palestine, the Moroccan underworld, and the wilds of India amidst the turmoil of the early twentieth century, this convenient ebook bundle compiles nine of their most thrilling adventures: O JERUSALEM, JUSTICE HALL, THE GAME, LOCKED ROOMS, THE LANGUAGE OF BEES, THE GOD OF THE HIVE, PIRATE KING, GARMENT OF SHADOWS and DREAMING SPIES

Also includes the ebook short story “Beekeeping for Beginners” and a preview of the highly anticipated new mystery from Laurie R. King, The Murder of Mary Russell! Praise for Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell mysteries “The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today.”—Lee Child “The great marvel of King’s series is that she’s managed to preserve the integrity of Holmes’s character and yet somehow conjure up a woman astute, edgy, and compelling enough to be the partner of his mind as well as his heart.”—The Washington Post Book World “A lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company.”—The New York Times “Erudite, fascinating . . . by all odds the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted.”—Houston Chronicle “An engaging romp guaranteed to please . . . perfectly written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”—USA Today, on Pirate King “Mesmerizing—another wonderful novel etched by the hand of a master storyteller. No reader who opens this one will be disappointed.”—Michael Connelly, on The God of the Hive “Historical fiction doesn’t get any better than this.”—The Denver Post, on The Game

See this TITLE: Dreaming Spies: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Laurie R. King’s novels of suspense featuring Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, are critically acclaimed and beloved by readers for the author’s adept interplay of history and adventure. Now the intrepid duo is finally trying to take a little time for themselves—only to be swept up in a baffling case that will lead them from the idyllic panoramas of Japan to the depths of Oxford’s most revered institution. After a lengthy case that had the couple traipsing all over India, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are on their way to California to deal with some family business that Russell has been neglecting for far too long. Along the way, they plan to break up the long voyage with a sojourn in southern Japan. The cruising steamer Thomas Carlyle is leaving Bombay, bound for Kobe. Though they’re not the vacationing types, Russell is looking forward to a change of focus—not to mention a chance to travel to a location Holmes has not visited before.

The idea of the pair being on equal footing is enticing to a woman who often must race to catch up with her older, highly skilled husband. Aboard the ship, intrigue stirs almost immediately. Holmes recognizes the famous clubman, the Earl of Darley, whom he suspects of being an occasional blackmailer: Not an unlikely career choice for a man richer in social connections than in pounds sterling. And then there’s the lithe, surprisingly fluent young Japanese woman who befriends Russell and quotes haiku. She agrees to tutor the couple in Japanese language and customs, but Russell can’t shake the feeling that Haruki Sato is not who she claims to be.

Once in Japan, Russell’s suspicions are confirmed in a most surprising way. From the glorious city of Tokyo to the cavernous library at Oxford, Russell and Holmes race to solve a mystery involving international extortion, espionage, and the shocking secrets that, if revealed, could spark revolution—and topple an empire.

Praise for Dreaming Spies “[Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell’s] unusual partnership is, as always, a delight to observe, and [Laurie R.] King expertly combines rich historical detail, deftly drawn characters and taut suspense. For Holmes fans, mystery lovers and those interested in either Japan or Oxford, this novel is a multilayered and entirely enjoyable journey.”—Shelf Awareness “Compulsively readable . . . Through astute, precise, and elegant writing, great attention to time and place, and beautifully realized characters, King has created a mystery series that is at once intelligent, reflective, and action filled.”—Library Journal “A story that keeps the reader enthralled . . . one of the most consistently outstanding mystery series out there. Any time spent with the Russell-Holmes duo is a delight.”—Booklist “Snappy prose and a captivating plot distinguish King’s fourteenth novel featuring Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes. . . . Many will find the character deepened by his partnership with the spirited and clever Russell.”—Publishers Weekly “The author continues to offer up incredible plotlines. . . . [Holmes and Russell’s] emotional bond only adds to the magic, suspense, and beauty of the original creation. King’s imagination continues to shine!”—Suspense Magazine.

See this TITLE: The Beekeeper's Apprentice: or, On the Segregation of the Queen (A Mary Russell Mystery)

What would happen if Sherlock Holmes, a perfect man of the Victorian age--pompous, smug, and misogynistic--were to come face to face with a twentieth-century female? If she grew to be a partner worthy of his great talents? Laurie R. King, whose very different first novel, A Grave Talent (SMP, 1993), drew rave reviews, read the Conan Doyle stories and wondered about such an imaginary encounter. And following through, she has written The Beekeeper's Apprentice. 1914, a young woman named Mary Russell meets a retired beekeeper on the Sussex Downs. His name is Sherlock Holmes. And although he may have all the Victorian "flaws" listed above, the Great Detective is no fool, and can spot a fellow intellect even in a fifteen-year-old woman. So, at first informally, then consciously, he takes Mary Russell as his apprentice. They work on a few small local cases, then on a larger and more urgent investigation, which ends successfully.

All the time, Mary is developing as a detective in her own right, with the benefit of the knowledge and experience of her mentor and, increasingly, friend. And then the sky opens on them, and they find themselves the targets of a slippery, murderous, and apparently all-knowing adversary. Together they devise a plan to trap their enemy--a plan that may save their lives but may also kill off their relationship. This is not a "Sherlock Holmes" story. It is the story of a modern young woman who comes to know and work with Holmes, the story of young woman coming to terms with herself and with this older man who embodies the age that is past.

Winner of the Nero Wolfe Award. It is 1921 and Mary Russell--Sherlock Holmes's brilliant apprentice, now an Oxford graduate with a degree in theology--is on the verge of acquiring a sizable inheritance. Independent at last, with a passion for divinity and detective work, her most baffling mystery may now involve Holmes and the burgeoning of a deeper affection between herself and the retired detective. Russell's attentions turn to the New Temple of God and its leader, Margery Childe, a charismatic suffragette and a mystic, whose draw on the young theology scholar is irresistible. But when four bluestockings from the Temple turn up dead shortly after changing their wills, could sins of a capital nature be afoot? Holmes and Russell investigate, as their partnership takes a surprising turn.

In the eerie wasteland of Dartmoor, Sherlock Holmes summons his devoted wife and partner, Mary Russell, from her studies at Oxford to aid the investigation of a death and some disturbing phenomena of a decidedly supernatural origin. Through the mists of the moor there have been sightings of a spectral coach made of bones carrying a woman long-ago accused of murdering her husband--and of a hound with a single glowing eye.

Returning to the scene of one of his most celebrated cases, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes and Russell investigate a mystery darker and more unforgiving than the moors themselves.

Only hours after Holmes and Russell return from solving one murky riddle on the moor, another knocks on their front door...literally. It’s a mystery that begins during the Great War, when Gabriel Hughenfort died amidst scandalous rumors that have haunted the family ever since. But it’s not until Holmes and Russell arrive at Justice Hall, a home of unearthly perfection set in a garden modeled on Paradise, that they fully understand the irony echoed in the family motto, Justicia fortitudo mea est:

A trail of ominous clues comprise a mystery that leads from an English hamlet to the city of Paris to the wild prairie of the New World. The trap is set, the game is afoot; but can Holmes and Russell catch an elusive killer--or has the murderer caught them?

See this TITLE: Pirate King (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes)

The latest adventure for the intrepid Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes takes readers into the frenetic world of silent films, where the pirates are real and the shooting isn’t all done with cameras. In England’s young silent-film industry, the megalomaniacal Randolph Fflytte is king. Nevertheless, Mary Russell is dispatched to investigate the criminal activities that surround Fflytte’s popular movie studio. So Russell is traveling undercover to Portugal, along with the film crew that is gearing up to shoot a cinematic extravaganza, Pirate King.

Based on Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, the project will either set the standard for movie-making for a generation or sink a boatload of careers. Nothing seems amiss until the enormous company starts rehearsals in Lisbon, where the thirteen blonde-haired, blue-eyed actresses Mary is bemusedly chaperoning meet the swarm of real buccaneers, Fflytte has recruited to provide authenticity. But when the crew embarks for Morocco and the actual filming, Russell feels a building storm of trouble: a derelict boat, a film crew with secrets, ominous currents between the pirates, decks awash with budding romance – and now the pirates are ignoring Fflytte and answering only to their dangerous outlaw leader, La Rocha. Plus, there’s a spy on board.

Where can Sherlock Holmes be? As movie make-believe becomes true terror, Russell and Holmes themselves may experience a final fadeout.

See this TITLE: The Game: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes

It’s only the second day of 1924, but Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, find themselves embroiled in intrigue. It starts with a New Year’s visit from Holmes’s brother Mycroft, who comes bearing a strange package containing the papers of an English spy named Kimball O’Hara—the same Kimball known to the world through Kipling’s famed Kim. Inexplicably, O’Hara withdrew from the “Great Game” of espionage and now he has just as inexplicably disappeared.

When Russell discovers Holmes’s own secret friendship with the spy, she knows the die is cast: she will accompany her husband to India to search for the missing operative. But Russell soon learns that in this faraway and exotic land, it’s often impossible to tell friend from foe—and that some games aren’t played for fun but for the highest stakes of all…life and death.

See this TITLE: The Murder of Mary Russell: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes

Laurie R. King's bestselling Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series weaves rich historical detail and provocative themes with intriguing characters and enthralling suspense. Russell and Holmes have become one of modern literature's most beloved teams. But does this adventure end it all? Mary Russell is used to dark secrets--her own, and those of her famous partner and husband, Sherlock Holmes. Trust is a thing slowly given, but over the course of a decade together, the two have forged an indissoluble bond. And what of the other person to whom Mary Russell has opened her heart: the couple's longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson? Russell's faith and affection are suddenly shattered when a man arrives on the doorstep claiming to be Mrs. Hudson's son.

What Samuel Hudson tells Russell cannot possibly be true, yet she believes him--as surely as she believes the threat of the gun in his hand. In a devastating instant, everything changes. And when the scene is discovered--a pool of blood on the floor, the smell of gunpowder in the air--the most shocking revelation of all is that the grim clues point directly to Clara Hudson. Or rather to Clarissa, the woman she was before Baker Street. The key to Russell's sacrifice lies in Mrs. Hudson's past.

To uncover the truth, a frantic Sherlock Holmes must put aside his anguish and push deep into his housekeeper's secrets--to a time before her disguise was assumed, before her crimes were buried away. There is death here, and murder, and trust betrayed. And nothing will ever be the same.

Praise for the award-winning novels of Laurie R. King "The great marvel of King's series is that she's managed to preserve the integrity of Holmes's character and yet somehow conjure up a woman astute, edgy, and compelling enough to be the partner of his mind as well as his heart."--The Washington Post Book World "The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today."--Lee Child "A lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company."--The New York Times "Erudite, fascinating . . . by all odds the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted."--Houston Chronicle "Intricate clockworks, wheels within wheels."--Booklist "Imaginative and subtle."--The Seattle Times "Impossible to put down."--Romantic Times "Remarkably beguiling."--The Boston Globe
